Final Concept of the Logo for Canaanville Arts Center
CHALLENGE:
Integrating the site’s historical identity into a contemporary logo design
The goal was to create a visual identity that honors the building’s origins as a former coal mine while representing its modern transformation into a community arts space.

APPROACH:
Historical Research
and Custom Lettering
Old archival photographs of signage from the original coal mine served as the foundation for the design. Letterforms were developed by studying the characters from archived photos from the site as it operated as a coal mine
The logo design was inspired by historical signage from the original Canaanville coal mine, as seen in this archival photograph from Ohio Memory.
Shown here are several design iterations developed prior to the final logo concept.
